Description

Are you a business owner or a human resources manager who wants to ensure compliance with wage and hour laws?

Understanding the complexities of paying employees can be overwhelming. Fortunately, this webinar is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the wage and hour laws that apply to both federal and state levels.

We will guide you through the fundamental elements of wage and hour law, including work week, workday, and hours worked. We will discuss overtime rules, minimum wage, paid family leave, mandatory sick leave, meal and rest periods, and much more.

The course will cover the crucial elements of wage and hour law. We will explain what constitutes a work week, a work day, and hours worked, as well as how the hours must be tracked or accounted for. Once we have established this foundation, we will dive into the rules for calculating overtime and the effects that other payments have over time, such as discretionary and nondiscretionary bonuses and commissions. We will also provide examples of how to calculate overtime correctly using both the FLSA method and the alternate method. Additionally, we will cover what to do when an employee is working at two or more rates.

While federal law covers some aspects of paying employees, it does not cover everything. Therefore, we will focus on state laws related to paid family leave, mandatory sick leave, meal and rest periods, paystubs and notices, how often employees must be paid, acceptable methods of paying employees, and handling terminating employees, including vacation pay-outs.

Learning Objectives:-

  • To explain the wage and hour terms of the work week, work day, hours worked, overtime, and minimum wage.
  • To identify the difference between federal and state laws and when which law takes priority.
  • To discuss overtime correctly under the FLSA when no other factors are present.
  • To explain overtime correctly under the FLSA when such factors as nondiscretionary bonuses, commissions, shift differential, piece work, or other factors are being paid to the employee.
  • To analyze how to track hours worked to pay the employee correctly including rounding of hours and what is considered “de minimis” timekeeping.
  • To discuss how to calculate the weighted average of pay rates to correctly determine the overtime due to an employee who is working two or more rates in a work week.
  • To examine the requirements for meal and rest periods under state laws.
